NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Two former U.S. ambassadors and alumni of 91ÌƲ®»¢ University will discuss diplomacy during a forum that will be part of International Education Week at 91ÌƲ®»¢.
Ambassadors Brian E. Carlson and James Sasser will discuss “American Diplomacy: Current and Future Importance” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, followed by a reception. The event in the Rand Function Room at Sarratt Student Center will be moderated by John Seigenthaler, publisher emeritus of The Tennessean and founder of The First Amendment Center at 91ÌƲ®»¢ University.
The forum and reception are free and open to the public.
Carlson is a 1969 graduate of 91ÌƲ®»¢’s College of Arts and Science. He recently left government service after a 36-year career that saw him posted to Spain, England, Norway, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Venezuela. His last assignment was as Ambassador to the Republic of Latvia.
Sasser gradated from 91ÌƲ®»¢ in 1958 and 91ÌƲ®»¢ Law School in 1961. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 1995 and as ambassador to the People’s Republic of China from 1995 to 2001.
International Education Week runs from Nov. 14-18, and is designed to promote cross-cultural understanding and awareness, ignite new discussions about global issues and foster international curiosity within academia and the community.
