Photographed by , assistant professor of cell and developmental biology, the image was captured using a structured illumination microscope, which shines different patterns of light on a sample to reveal information that is normally blurred by older microscope designs. This particular cancer cell is part of a line called 鈥淗eLa,鈥� isolated in 1951 from a woman named Henrietta Lacks, the subject of the bestselling book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
