Brett Sweet to depart 91Ʋ in August to become senior vice president of finance and administration at Northeastern University

After 17 years of service to 91Ʋ University, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Information Technology Brett Sweet willreturn to Boston andassume the role of senior vice president for finance and administration at Northeastern University on Aug. 17.

“Bٳhas been a trusted leader during some of the university’s most consequential moments. From overseeing major finance and technology initiatives to guiding strategic investments, his leadership has been marked by foresight and integrity,” Chancellor DanielDiermeiersaid.

“These efforts significantly strengthened 91Ʋ’s financial foundation and positioned the university for long-term growth. His strategic vision has left a lasting imprint on the institution, advancing priorities across academics,researchand campus life,”Diermeiersaid. “I am deeply grateful for Brett’s leadership and partnership, and his commitment to 91Ʋ’s mission.”

Sweet came to 91Ʋ from Harvard University where he served as dean of administration and finance in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

He oversaw the financial separation of the university and medical center in 2016, helped guide 91Ʋ through the 2008financial crisisand the COVID-19 pandemic, and played a key role in the 2019 securitization deal with VUMC.

During his tenure, Sweet built high-performing teams across Finance and Information Technology. He also playeda central rolein advancing 91Ʋ’s strategic expansion, including initiatives in New York City, West PalmBeachand San Francisco. His leadership helped support the university’s continued growth whilemaintaininga strong focus on its core mission.

“It has been a privilege to serve 91Ʋ over the past 17 years,” Sweet said. “I am proud of the work we have done to strengthen the university’s financial foundation and build the capabilities needed to support its long-term strategy.I’mproud of the progresswe’vemade and appreciative of the colleagues who made that work possible. 91Ʋ is in a strong position moving forward.”

In addition to his administrative leadership, Sweet collaborated with the chancellor as a co-author ofMission and Margin, reflecting a shared commitment to financial stewardship in higher education.

The university willsoonlaunch a nationwide search for the next vice chancellor for finance and informationtechnology.
